For our first day together, we played a getting to know you game! We all thought of an adjective that described each of us, and that also started with the first letter of our name!
Some examples were... Kind Kayla, Magnificent Marissa, Amazing Ada, and Nice Neena.
We went around our circle and shared and then played a little game where we ran around and placed our stickers on our friends' backs.
After we all introduced ourselves, we played a running game. As Coach Hiner yelled out a quality, if the girl felt it discribed her, then she ran to Coach Benge and then back. Some of the items were: loves to dance, is an only child, loves to read, has brown eyes, was born in another city, has participated in girls on the run before, and the list continues... This is a great 'get to know you' game! We realized things that we have in common with one another, while also being proud of what makes us who we are!
Girls on the Run, is so much FUN!
Here is a message from the Founder of Girls on the Run, Molly Barker.
"Hi amazing girls! I am so glad you are now a Girl on the Run! I remember how I felt when I was your age. Sometimes I felt like I didn't fit in. I went through times wanting to be popular. When I was older, I was out on a run and I finally realized that all that mattered was how I felt about myself - not what others thought. I was in charge of my life.
I now know that I am amazing, beautiful, and wonderful. And so are you! We are all strong, wise and beautiful just the way we are! Look at the girls with you in this circle and realize how wonderful you each are in your own ways!
Your friend and biggest fan, Molly Barker"
Molly Barker started G.O.T.R. in North Carolina. In 1996, she met with a small group of girls just like us! And we are so grateful for her vision! This is now, a nationwide program. Thank you Molly, we are so excited to start another season of Girls on the Run, here at Woodview Elementary!

Check out this great article about Girls on the Run, written by Laura Martin.
Girls on the Run is really making a difference in the lives of girls, nationwide! What a terrific program to promote! I love having the opportunity to promote this great program and seeing the positive effects it has on all the girls.
Girls on the run is a nonprofit organization and is currently serving OVER 130,000 girls in more than 200 different cities across North America! It is continuing to grow Every year! In Greater Houston Area itself, we have more than doubled in the past year! The word is spreading and girls are loving being a part of this great program!
The article has a great synopses about what Girls on the Run is all about... Laura Martin recorded an interview with 'York', someone who has been involved with Girls on the Run for the past twelve years, and this is what she shared about Girls on the Run... "Running is secondary to the life lessons that we teach the girls, for the most part you are teaching them these life lessons without them realizing they are learning them. Instead of sitting them in a room and talking at them, they are doing activities and learning." This is so true! The curriculum is designed in such a great way, I love being a part of the conversations we have with these girls over the different lessons.

We had a lot of fun last season of Girls on the Run! We had 3rd and 4th graders participate. Here are some pictures from the lessons. We do team building activities to build trust and friendships with one another. In order to complete most of them, the girls have to realize the importance of working together and the key role they each play in every one's success. It is so wonderful, as volunteer coaches, to see the change that happens with the girls throughout the semester of this program. It is so awesome to see them being positive and encouraging each other! We love girls on the run! And as we say at the end of everyday, before we part... "Girls on the run is so much fun!"
Some of our girls before the big race! Everyone finished! We were so proud and had so much FUN!
