Last Season

We had a lot of fun last season of Girls on the Run! We had 3rd and 4th graders participate. Here are some pictures from the lessons. We do team building activities to build trust and friendships with one another. In order to complete most of them, the girls have to realize the importance of working together and the key role they each play in every one's success. It is so wonderful, as volunteer coaches, to see the change that happens with the girls throughout the semester of this program. It is so awesome to see them being positive and encouraging each other! We love girls on the run! And as we say at the end of everyday, before we part... "Girls on the run is so much fun!"

Some of our girls before the big race! Everyone finished! We were so proud and had so much FUN!

Girls on the Run at Woodview Elementary

This will be the third season of Girls on the Run that we have offered, through our after-school program, at Woodview Elementary. We are very fortunate to be able to participate in this great program at our school. It is such a wonderful program for girls to be a part of, grades 3rd-5th. Girls on the Run is an international, non-profit organization that is helping girls everywhere to gain confidence, a better self-image, as well as learn to be a peacemaker and girl against bullying. It is a great proactive program to get girls to bond and learn important life skills. They also have the opportunity to overcome challenges and goals they set while learning to live a healthy life.  It is so neat to see the growth that happens through this program, in each girl that participates. They are so proud of themselves and the obstacles that they have overcome. In conclusion to the curriculum, they are encouraged to participate in a 5K. What a great feeling of accomplishment they feel when this great task is successfully completed. Here is a video to give you a glimpse of how this program empowers young girls.

Here is an excerpt from the Girls on the Run website, about the program's mission, "We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running...Over a period of 10-12 weeks, girls in the 3rd through 5th grade participate in an after-school program like no other. Designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique.

The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.  Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age.  They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. We start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what’s important to them.  Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships.  And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world.

Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health.  At the end of each three month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5k event.  This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum.  Completing the 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.  Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible."
